Thoofan off the Screen :

 

Mega Power Star Ram Charan’s foray into Bollywood sure made waves. The movie released as Zanjeer across and Toofan in AP. The AP release was marred by the state bifurcation hoopla. The movie created a lot of buzz in Bollywood. However, the Telugu version of the movie couldn’t generate the same response from the audience. The delayed release being partly the reason. Toofan opened to good showings across all metro and Tier-2 cities. But it wasn’t the kind of opening you expect from a Mega hero.

 

What’s in Thoofan ?

 

As we gave away earlier, this is the story of Vijay Khanna (Ram Charan) an honest cop with serious insubordination issues. A bad temper and a strong sense of doing justice, whatever the cost, seem to be the only thing at his disposal. He is also repressing a horrible past. Vijay Khanna is transferred to Mumbai where he immediately takes on the biggest bully in the playground within no time. Vijay is put onto a controversial case where he meets the beautiful Mala (Priyanka Chopra). Mala is an NRI who is in Mumbai on a trivial excuse, where she happens to witness a murder.
Vijay locks horns with the kingpin of the Oil Mafia, Rudra Pratap Teja (Prakash Raj), and does all he can to try and bring him down. Helping him in this mission are friends he made along the way, honest Journo JD (Bharani) and the goon with an ethic, Sher Khan (‘Real Star’ Sri Hari).

 

The movie was marketed as an honest tribute to the original done by Amitabh Bacchan. However, it turned out to be just another remake. What’s good in Thoofan ?

 

*  Ram Charan makes a sincere effort to bring to reinvent the angry young man on the screen. His more composed performance in the second half is what the fans actually came to see.
*  ‘Real Star’ Dr. Sri Hari was one of the highlights of this film. He’s almost an authority in TFI when it comes to roles like this. His snappy dialogues really boosted his character’s image.
*  Prakash Raj pulls off another marvelous performance and keeps the audience entertained with his fun-loving baddy. The corny one-liners and casual swag he maintains intensify his baddy appeal.
*  The dialogue in the movie is crisp. The intense good guy-bad guy showdowns had some catchy one-liners that will really provide momentum to the movie.
*  The sharp background score fell pleasantly on the ear during some action sequences.
*  Apoorva Lakhia managed to tell his story without much running about.
Drawbacks in Thoofan:
*  Ram Charan in the first half. The attempt to bring his version of the angry young man didn’t quite work out in the first half. He did a great job in some scenes, especially his introduction scenes. However, some scenes his performance just dropped. This picked up greatly in the second half.
*  The background score in the first half was frankly annoying. We know that you are projecting an idealist, but that doesn’t mean you go overboard with ‘Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram’.
*  Priyanka Chopra is frankly underused and even wasted. Such an amazing actress was reduced to just a glam doll in this movie.
The Telugu version of the songs also failed to evoke the same response as in Hindi.
*  We really wanted to see a solo song for Sri Hari. The ‘Yaari…’ song was a highlight of the original. It could have really added depth to Sri Hari’s character.

 

What we need to conclude ?

 

That is just bullet points for now. The final takeaway from this movie is that Ram Charan didn’t disappoint the audience and did a tight job. Hearing the good reviews of Zanjeer from various sources makes me certain in saying that the soul of the movie was lost in translation. Maybe the movie is best viewed in Hindi.

Give it a watch for Ram Charan. Despite some obvious flaws the film managed to entertain a fair amount. The Telugu version is just fine, but if you can, watch the movie in Hindi too.
