Rewind 2013 : Boxoffice Review

In a few hours, we are going to step into a New year, before that lets have a descry about the various film performances at Tollywood Box office this past year. We have witnessed over 100+ straight releases and 30 + dubbing releases this year, which have faced ambivalent results. 2013 is a year that has delivered propitious results for straight films and only Kamal Hassan’s Viswaroopam, Singam2 and Pizza of Tamil and Dhoom-3 , Krish -3 of Hindi made a strong impression among Dubbing films.

It’s been a year of Small Budget films which are successful in attaining huge profits and by dragging audience attention towards them with fresh and avant-grade scripts. Starting with Swamy Ra Ra during the first quarter of the year, Small Budget films continued their Successful Marathon throughout the year. On the other hand, Big ticket films failed to meet the Box office expectations. Senior Actors like Nagarjuna and Venkatesh are finding it a bit tougher to score hits these days. While the stars like Balakrishna and Nani had no outcomes in 2013. Nani’s “Paisa”  was supposed to release this year, but due to financial difficulties it didn’t see the light of day. Strikingsoon presents the BoxOffice review of the year gone past a little closely, only for you.

2013 First Half : (January-June)

Tollywood enjoyed a windfall during this period and many films were reported as Box office hits. Ram Charan’s “Naayak” was the first biggest hit of the year which went on to collect over  46 Crores till its final run. Then there was Mahesh and Venkatesh’s “Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu” which re-introduced the dying trend of  ”Multi-Starrer” films in Tollywood. SVSC has reported huge collections overseas. Prabhas also had a career defining film this year. His Box office stamina was proved beyond any doubt with the collections of “Mirchi”  which amount to approx. 48 Crs.  Young Tiger, NTR who has got tremendous caliber in his acting, has finally joined the 40 + Crore club this year with “Baadshah”. Though, Many trade analysts opined that its performance at Box Office is not as expected, it remains as the highest grosser in NTR’s Career.

Venkatesh who received a stupendous response for his multi-starrer “SVSC”  in winter, failed to make it in the Summer with “Shadow” as a single hero turning out to be a disaster. Desamuduru Combination, Allu-Arjun and Puri Jagannadh also failed to continue their success record with Iddarammayilatho. Raviteja finally managed to get back on the Success track with “Balupu” produced by PVP cinemas which has hit the theaters in the month of June. Small Budget films like Swamy Rara, Premakatha Chitram, Back Bench student produced unexpected revenues. Nikhil and Swathi turned as Hit Pair with Swamy rara and Sudheer Babu has tasted first success in his career with Prema Katha Chitram. Naga Chaithanya who is striving to become a mass hero, also received his first success as Mass Hero with “Thadaka”. Nagarjuna’s “Greekuveerudu”  is misfired with its poor CG work and Production values. Gouravam, Nara Rohith’s Okkadine, Jabardasth, Something Something and Saradaga ammaitho are few other failed films.

2013 Second Half : (July- December)

Well, we can’t  Judge this part as salubrious to Tollywood, though it bagged an Industry with “Attarintiki Daredhi. Due to the unforeseeable situations in the state that went on to take place since July and Uncertain political weather, TFI has witnessed several push backs. “Yevadu” Stands first among such films and is trying to find its  release by Pongal. Apart from the un-prevailing conditions in the state, some films were postponed due to various financial difficulties. Nani’s “Paisa” and Naga Chaithanya’s “Auto Nagar Surya” fall under this category, are still trying hard to recover.

Second half of the year got a kick start with Gopichand’s  adventurous thriller “Sahasam”. 3 Dimensional technology stepped into Tollywood during this latter part with Kalyan Ram’s OM and Allari Naresh’s “Action” ,but failed to impress the audience with poor execution. Pawan Kalyan’s “Attarintiki Daredhi” is undoubtedly the Movie of the year, which has raked a record number of collections by crossing the serious Piracy Hurdle. “Attarintiki Daredhi”  has turned out to be an Industry Hit beating “Magadheera”, inspite of blatant piracy a week before its release.  NTR’s “Ramayya Vasthavayya” couldn’t reach the expectations and its Box Office performance was also poor. Ram Charan’s “Toofan” was also declared a disaster, due to Ram Charan’s plastic performance.

Small Budget films have earned Big this time around. Films like Venkatadri Express, Anthaka Mundu Aa Tharwatha, Prema Ishq Kadal, Uyyala Jampala have received critical appreciation and had grabbed decent collections. Sundeep Kishan has himself said that he has tasted the first success in his career with “Venkatadri Express” and continued his energy in his latest release “D for Dopidi” too. Uyyala Jampala has given promising actors and technicians to the industry, In fact the movie is promising as well.

On the whole, 2013 has produced mixed results at the Box Office. Pawan Kalyan, Prabhas, Mahesh Babu are the top league stars with 100 % Success rate. We have also seen a few high budget films that tumbled near Box office for various reasons, failing to collect even the 50 % of its Budget. Finally, its Small budget films which have proved their potential by raking down the unexpected number of collections and huge crowds into theaters.

The only thing that was missing this year was a 100 Crore film in Telugu. Pawan Kalyan’s AD came the closest to hitting this mark. 2014 will begin with a lot of hopes riding on it. We along with most of you hope that, Telugu Film Industry will see a 100 Crore film very soon. Team Strikingsoon wishes the Telugu film audience a very happy new year.
